Music from Dark Times — Wars cast dark shadows on everything that craves light and warmth. Maurice Ravel composed his piano trio in a minor in 1914 in the shock of the outbreak of the First World War. “I work with the certainty and clairvoyance of a madman”. He thus saved himself in a state of emergency. Three years later – in 1917 during the war – Igor Stravinsky, the Russian exile, created “l’histoire du soldat” – a work in which everything was shaken from bottom to top. It was revolutionary time, it was end time. The pact with the devil still offered respite for moments.
Oliver Messiaen’s unique composition “Quatuor pour la fin du temps” was premiered on January 15, 1941, in front of about 400 prisoners of war. Two movements from this “quartet” will be played – music of crystalline clarity and a melodicism and figuration that wraps itself protectively around our hearts.

Since 2016, the state-recognized Barenboim-Said Academy has been teaching talented young musicians, primarily from the Middle East and North Africa, in the pedagogical spirit of Edward Said and Daniel Barenboim. In addition to musical theory and practice, the intensive study program places a second emphasis on humanities topics. Students learn to listen to each other and develop their own ideas against a broad, interdisciplinary and transcultural educational background. The goal is to educate musically excellent, curious, and reflective individuals. With the participation in the festival INS OFFENE..! the Barenboim-Said-Academy starts its alumni work.
Musik X Art
INS OFFENE..! presents visual art as an integral part of the concert events within the framework of the festival, such as the picture series “Music in Picture” by the Italian artist Flavio de Marco, paintings by the Ukrainian painter Kate Nikolya or the video installation “Artificial Intelligence Mental Disorder” by the Uzbek-Azerbaijani artist duo Denis Davydov and Farhad Farzali.
